Was Rob’s solo show everything I had hoped it would be?  Yes, yes it was.  A little bit of everything I love about his music all neatly packaged into a cute little 90 minutes.   The new songs definitely rocked a bit more with the full band, and I thoroughly enjoyed the Lactose Adept medley (Speedy Delivery, Ode to Tile, Who Takes My Recyclables).  

What you don’t see on the setlist is the short Heavy Vegetable set that they closed the show with.  Fucking.  awesome.  Though my brain hurts, and I can’t remember what they played.  Stupid old age.  Now I’m even more excited about The Other Men record (out March 20th on Robcore!).  Its going to rock.

On a related note, as I was finishing this mix, I read this post where the incredible Paige reminisces. Gave me a giggle, as this mix is composed entirely of “old” songs, with none of them being younger than 6. Most of these songs I discovered in the early to mid 90s or are by bands that I discovered then, with a couple of real oldies that I love thrown in.

I’ve been thinking about philosophies of mix making today. I like to have a theme in mind sometimes, but mostly its about a group of songs that speak to me that day. I try to place them in such a way as it doesn’t sound boring, with varying success. I like to start with a rocker and slow down toward the middle a bit. Either end with another rocker, or maybe a long number. This is usually the part I work on the longest, and am rarely satisified with. I’d like to hear others’ philosophies, too, if you’re interested.

Jeremy Enigk’s new solo ablum is to be released October17th on his own Lewis Hollow Recordings label. To say that I am looking forward to it, would be the understatement of the year. For the past 12 years, Jeremy’s music has had a profound influence on me. I never tire of Diary. I love the classic rock influences in the Fire Theft album. He’s matured well. His music is still inspiring and beautiful as always. I also plan on catching him on his tour with Cursive in November. Tour dates are posted at Jeremy’s myspace profile.

At Home With Owen

Its not out yet, but I highly recommend this record for sweet, loving bedroom moments.  Listen to “Bad News”  (Note:  the lyrics on this tune aren’t especially romantic, but the music is lovely, and sets the musical tone of the album perfectly.)

I’m so jealous.

The Lemonheads are back, and I mean REALLY back. This song rocks and J. Mascis’ guitar work is perfect. Plus with Bill Stevenson playing drums and recording, it has just enough rawk to offset Dando’s pretty voice.

Evan, thank you for this song. After years of disappointment, you have come through. Here’s to hoping the rest of the album is this good.
